Hedge care above Viking Bay, done considered.

Cutting, reduction, removal and planting across Broadstairs, St Peter's and the clifftop bays from Dumpton Gap up to Kingsgate. Fully insured. Salt-wise species choice. Six-week conservation-area notice filed on your behalf. Herring-gull nesting checked before any cliff-edge work.

What I do

Four services. No upselling.

Specified for the Margate Chalk under the Thanet coast, the salt-laden northeasterlies off the North Sea, and the three conservation areas that cover much of Broadstairs' Victorian and Edwardian core.

Routine hedge cutting

Annual or twice-yearly cuts on Escallonia, Griselinia, privet, laurel, holm oak, hawthorn and the rest. Formal coastal cadence, clean lines, all arisings cleared.

See pricing & timing

Height & width reduction

Bringing overgrown Victorian-villa hedges back into proportion — the four-floor terraces on Gladstone Road, the mature laurel and Leylandii screens that sit right on the 2m High Hedges line.

How I reduce safely

Hedge removal & stump work

Full removal with grinder access where it fits, root-ball lift where it is worth saving, and chalk-soil reinstatement over Thanet's thin marl-free topsoil. TDC tree-check first.

What removal involves

New hedge planting

Escallonia, Olearia, Tamarix on the front line, yew and hawthorn set back — and an honest steer away from beech, common laurel and Leylandii on any exposed clifftop plot.

The promise

Three things you can hold me to.

A proper job, or you don't pay.

I don't ask for payment until you have walked the hedge with me and you are happy. If I haven't done what I said I would, I put it right or you owe me nothing. No deposits, no upfront, no chasing.

£

10% off for pensioners.

Anyone on a state pension, automatically. No card, no proof of anything — just mention it when you book. Honour system.

10% off bigger return jobs.

Used me before? Your next job over £500 gets 10% off, no time limit, no asking. Logged when the quote goes out — you do not need to remind me.

Why local matters

A Broadstairs hedge is not a generic hedge.

The Thanet coast is the type area for the Margate Chalk Member of the Upper Cretaceous — thin, sharply alkaline topsoil, marl-free and flint-poor. Manston records 1,846 hours of sunshine a year (1991–2020), which puts Broadstairs among the sunniest places in the UK, with rainfall of just 613mm. Prevailing wind is westerly and south-westerly, but the killer vector for coastal planting is the N/NE salt-laden air off the North Sea — that decides which species live and which die.

I work to that reality, not against it. Escallonia and Olearia on the seafront where Griselinia is too tender in a hard East Kent winter. Yew and hawthorn set back where beech would scorch through July. Native hawthorn on chalk-loving field boundaries out towards Reading Street. And a tape measure on any stem approaching the 75mm conservation-area threshold before I touch it.

Inside a conservation area?

I handle the paperwork.

Broadstairs has three designated conservation areas: Broadstairs CA (extended twice, most recently 23 July 2009), St Peter's CA and Reading Street CA (both 13 April 1973). Any tree with a stem over 75mm at chest height needs six weeks' written notice to Thanet District Council before pruning. I file the section-211 notice on your behalf, included in every quote.
